School Groups

Sheep and two lambsPlanning a field trip? James Monroe’s Highland offers engaging student programs for grades K-12 that are aligned with the Virginia History and Social Science Standards of Learning. Student programs are offered to schools, homeschoolers, and other parties by advance reservation and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations must be placed at least two weeks in advance and require a minimum of 10 students. Contact Nancy Stetz with questions or to make a reservation at or 434-293-8000.


Student Programs

Guided House & Grounds Tour (All Ages)

Time: 1-1.5 hours 
This visit is a tour of the Monroe house geared toward students, with a guided tour of the grounds. Includes outbuildings, dependency spaces, gardens, animals, and historic games.

Middle School Guided House & Grounds Tour

Time: 1-1.5 hours 
This interactive tour invites students to think about friendships, family relationships, risk-taking, conflict, and slavery by posing essential questions that focus on students’ own experiences and understanding of the world. Students are encouraged to empathize with the dilemmas of the founding era and to draw understanding that is applicable today. Includes guided house and grounds, plus historic games.

Farm Tour (Pre-K through 2nd grade)

Time: 2 hours
Young visitors tour James Monroe’s farm with a guide. Activities include historic games, interactive demonstrations, and visiting with farm animals and gardens. Tour does not go inside the Monroe house.

James Monroe in the American Revolution (3rd-6th grade)

Time: 2 hours
Did you know James Monroe fought and was wounded in the Revolutionary War? Students will role play James Monroe’s experience using objects and primary sources. Program includes a house tour, guided grounds visit and historic games.

Archaeology Lab (3rd grade and up)

Time: 2 hours
In this hands-on program, students learn about life at James Monroe’s Highland plantation, explore the pathways of archaeological research, and interpret real artifacts. Facilitated program held indoors also includes a house tour, guided grounds visit and historic games.

Historic Crafts

Time: 30 minutes
Crafts can be requested separately for groups of 10 or more OR added to a school group visit itinerary. (Candle and lantern making available from October through April.)
