Virginia’s folk masters and their apprentices will be here at Highland for a celebration of traditional music\, food\, and crafts. The festival will feature the graduating class of masters and apprentices and welcome in the new class\, plus many Virginia Folklife apprenticeship program alumni. SUMMARY:Annual Highland Sheep Shearing
DESCRIPTION:Highland’s annual sheep shearing will take place on Sunday\, April 28 (rain or shine). At 2:00 p.m. Tom Stanley will demonstrate the New Zealand sheep shearing method at this educational\, agricultural event. We will also have traditional wool carding and spinning demonstrations for the family from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. \nIf the weather is favorable\, visitors are encouraged to enjoy a picnic lunch on the grounds. \nAdmission to the sheep shearing event is $5 per person. Children under 6 are admitted free. Monroe’s Farm Friends members are admitted FREE OF CHARGE! \nAbout Tom Stanley\nTom Stanley has worked with sheep his entire life\, starting with an orphaned lamb when he was 9 years old. He started shearing his own sheep when he was 14 years old. Today\, Tom is employed by Virginia Tech as an Agriculture Extension Agent based in Rockbridge County and keeps a small flock of 40 breeding sheep that lamb each April.

SUMMARY:Highland Honey and Mead Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, April 11\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for the Highland Honey and Mead Tasting. Guests will have a chance to speak with volunteer beekeepers Paul Legrand and Leslie Bouterie\, sample honey from Highland and around the world\, and enjoy music by artists from The Front Porch Roots Music School! In addition to honey sampling\, Hilltop Berry Farm & Winery\, Black Heath Meadery\, and Skjald Meadworks will be offering tastings of their Virginia-made mead. These fine meaderies will also have their craft brews available to purchase! \nAdmission to this event is $5 per person. Children under 6 are admitted free. While this is a family friendly event\, guests must be 21 or older (bring a valid ID) to participate in the mead tasting or purchase mead. SUMMARY:Drop Spindle Class
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 2\, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon\, Highland will host a drop spindle class. Led by crafter Russell Hubert\, participants will learn how to spin wool using the traditional drop spindle method. \nWool used during the drop spindle class will be provided by Highland from our flock of Dorset sheep. Participants in the class will learn how this wool is processed from fleece to yarn using early-nineteenth century techniques. \nAdmission to the drop spindle class is $10 per person. Appropriate for ages 10 and up. No materials or experience are needed to participate. Russell was originally hired as an open hearth cook\, and branched out to many other historical crafts. He mastered the historic art of paper quilling and his work has been featured in the White House and Virginia Governor’s Mansion. Russell has been hand-spinning wool at Highland for over 15 years\, teaching a countless number of curious adults and children alike.
