SUMMARY:Highland Virtual Book Club: September Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, September 8 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.\, for an evening of lively discussion hosted by James Monroe’s Highland. This event is FREE and open to the public. \n\n\nDuring the September meeting of our book club\, Highland guide Emily Stanfill will lead the group in discussion of The Ledger and the Chain: How Domestic Slave Traders Shaped America by Joshua D. Rothman. \n\n\n“The story of the international slave trade is well known to many. Much less known are the workings of the domestic slave trade in the United States that sent scores of enslaved African Americans from the Upper South to the cotton and sugar fields in the Deep South. With exhaustive research and piercing insight\, Joshua Rothman’s The Ledger and the Chain brings that history alive through the stories of three men who sat at the nexus between Southern cotton producers and Northern financial institutions. As the tragic legacies of these men are still with us\, this book should be read by all who are interested in our current racial predicament.”―Annette Gordon-Reed\, coauthor of Most Blessed of the Patriarchs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo RSVP for this FREE event\, email education@highland.org.

SUMMARY:Neglected History: Lives of Enslaved Laborers on the Monticello\, Montpelier and Highland Plantations
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, June 17\, from 7:00 – 8:30pm for Neglected History: Lives of Enslaved Laborers on the Monticello\, Montpelier and Highland Plantations. Hosted by The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library\, this virtual panel discussion will focus on the lives of the enslaved laborers who lived and worked at Monticello\, Montpelier\, and Highland. Experts from these presidential plantations\, including Highland executive director Sara Bon-Harper\, will speak about what life was like for the field workers\, blacksmiths\, carpenters\, and house workers\, who kept these plantations running while living within a dehumanizing and brutal system. Their perspectives and stories present a more complete American history\,  and highlight the lives of those who have been long relegated to obscurity.  The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Justene Hill Edwards\, a UVA professor whose research focuses on the history of slavery in the United States. SUMMARY:Highland Virtual Book Club: June Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually on Wednesday\, June 9 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.\, for an evening of lively discussion hosted by James Monroe’s Highland. This event is FREE and open to the public. \n\n\nDuring the June meeting of our book club\, Highland’s Mellon Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Maria DiBenigno will lead the group in discussion of Never Caught: The Washingtons‘ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave\, Ona Judge by Erica Armstrong Dunbar. \n\n\n“Never Caught is the compelling story of Ona Judge Staines\, the woman who successfully defied George and Martha Washington in order to live as free woman. With vivid prose and deep sympathy\, Dunbar paints a portrait of woman whose life reveals the contradictions at the heart of the American founding: men like Washington fought for liberty for themselves even as they kept people like Ona Staines in bondage. There is no way to really know the Washingtons without knowing this story.” — Annette Gordon Reed\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hemings of Monticello \n\nTo RSVP for this FREE event\, email education@highland.org. SUMMARY:Highland Virtual Book Club: April Meeting (Youth Book Club)
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually on Wednesday\, April 14\, from 3:30 – 4:15 p.m.\, for an afternoon of lively literary discussion. This event is FREE and open to the public. \n\nDuring the April meeting of our book club\, Education Programs Manager Nancy Stetz will lead the group in discussion of Zora and Me by Victoria Bond and T.R. Simon. Recommended for ages 10-13\, Zora and Me is a coming-of-age historical fiction about the imagined childhood of author Zora Neale Hurston in Eatonville\, Florida. Highland has longtime connections to Florida through descendants from the enslaved community at Highland who were growing up in a neighboring county during Hurston’s childhood.   \n\n\n“It is with sheer genius that Bond and Simon have created something for readers young and old — there are familiar references\, like the ‘Brazzles\,’ for true Zora-philes\, as well as revelatory and wondrous information for those readers as yet uninitiated in the masterful storytelling of Zora Neale Hurston. This is a grand and accessible work that educates\, informs\, and entertains\, and one that I am personally grateful was written for all of us.” —Lucy Anne Hurston\, niece of Zora Neale Hurston \n\nTo RSVP for this FREE event\, click on the link below or email education@highland.org. SUMMARY:Virtual Talk: Florida Bound\, Casa Bianca Plantation's Enslaved People
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 30 from 7:00-8:00 pm\, join Highland Education Manager Nancy Stetz in conversation with independent researchers Miranda Burnett and Martin Violette to learn about the lives of the enslaved families from Highland who were sold by James Monroe to Casa Bianca plantation in the Florida Territory. Burnett and Violette’s research was featured in the New York Times (July 8\, 2019) and was published in the Florida Historical Quarterly (vol. 98 no 2) and the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation (vol. 1 no. 2). \nThis virtual talk will be presented via a Zoom webinar and broadcast on the Highland Facebook page. To register for the Zoom webinar follow the link below: \n[otw_shortcode_button href=”https://cwm.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_eIePs_5xREKro04ojWbiOQ” size=”medium” icon_position=”left” shape=”radius” color_class=”otw-blue” target=”_blank”]Register Now[/otw_shortcode_button]\n  \n\n\n\n\nNancy Stetz has been Education Programs Manager at Highland since 2014. She manages historical interpretation\, educational programming\, and group tours. She has a B.S. in Middle Grades Education and an M.A. in Public History\, both from Appalachian State University. She is passionate about bringing Highland to life for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. \n  \n  \n  \n\n\n \nMiranda Burnett is the Historical Collection Librarian for the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library and Albemarle-Charlottesville Historical Society. For the past 6 years Miranda has also been a guide at James Monroe’s Highland\, with a short stint as a guide at James Madison’s Montpelier. Her love of history and discovering unknown stories led her and colleague Martin Violette to collaborate and explore the question “What happened to the enslaved families James Monroe sold to Florida in 1828?” They published their findings on the website TakeThemInFamilies.com and recently contributed the collected data to Enslaved.org. In addition to her research and writing\, Miranda is also an avid reader and seamstress and enjoys dragging her family to historic sites. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nMartin Violette is an independent researcher who lives in Crozet\, Virginia. Before retirement\, he worked as a part-time guide at James Monroe’s Highland for five years\, and previously as a guide for eight years at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Mr. Violette holds a Masters in Russian literature from UNC-Chapel Hill\, with further work at Cornell University\, and independent study of Anglophone and Francophone literature of the Caribbean at Cornell and the University of the West Indies\, Trinidad. \n
