SUMMARY:Virtual Program: A Latin Americanist's Reading of the Monroe Doctrine\, 1823-2023
DESCRIPTION:*Map of America by Juan Downey\, image courtesy of MoMA \nJoin us on Friday\, December 1 at 1:00 p.m.\, as we welcome James Madison University professor Dr. Kristen McCleary\, for a FREE virtual program: A Latin Americanist’s Reading of the Monroe Doctrine\, 1823-2023. This talk highlights the Monroe Doctrine’s explicit connections to Latin America. In particular\, it examines the way the Monroe Doctrine was given meaning through cultural expressions both from the US and Latin America\, including Cuban José Marti’s essay Our America (1892)\, William Dieterle’s film Juárez (1939) and Americo Paredes’ novel George Washington Gómez (1990)\, among others. Follow the link below to register for this free virtual program: \n\n[otw_shortcode_button href=”https://cwm.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_23TeA5p3RkWq1LmarjpQIw” size=”medium” icon_position=”left” shape=”radius” color_class=”otw-blue” target=”_blank”]Register Now![/otw_shortcode_button]\n\nAbout Dr. Kristen McCleary\nKristen McCleary is associate professor of Latin American history at James Madison University. Her research explores the intersection between social history and urban culture. She writes about how cultural activities (theater\, carnival\, film\, and music) provide spaces for people to connect and built community\, which in turn creates new pathways towards political and social power. She is interested\, as well\, in the shared cultural heritage of the Americas\, arguing that culture flows over borders in powerful and often unseen ways. Her book\, “All the City’s a Stage: Theater and Society in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, 1810-1920\,” is forthcoming with University of Pittsburgh Press\, Latin American Studies series\, (Spring 2024).

SUMMARY:Spheres of Influence: Two Hundred Years of the Monroe Doctrine
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 28 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.\, either in-person at The McGowan Theatre at the National Archives or virtually\, for Spheres of Influence: Two Hundred Years of the Monroe Doctrine. This program will feature a panel of scholars who will discuss the history as well as the current use of the best-known U.S. policy toward the Western Hemisphere. Highlighted in an otherwise routine annual message delivered to Congress by President James Monroe in December 1823\, the doctrine warned European nations that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or puppet monarchs in the Western Hemisphere. Sara Bon-Harper\, Executive Director\, James Monroe’s Highland and Scott H. Harris\, Executive Director\, University of Mary Washington Museums\, will lead the discussion of the three main elements of the Monroe Doctrine: non- colonization\, non-intervention\, and separate spheres of influence for the Americas and Europe. This program is presented in partnership with James Monroe Museum and James Monroe’s Highland. What can we learn from cookbooks that we can’t get from other sources? Visitors will be encouraged to share their own cookbook collections and/or cooking histories to incorporate their stories into the exhibit. \nThese programs are in partnership with Highland’s latest project\, the Highland Descendants Foodways Project\, a collaboration between Highland\, the Council of Descendant Advisors\, and William & Mary’s Institute for Integrative Conservation. This project explores how food and recipes help tell a community’s history\, preserve its traditions\, and create new connections. \nAccess to the Cookbook Pop-Up Exhibit is including with the purchase of general admission tickets.
