DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, November 6\, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.\, for an evening of lively literary discussion at Highland\, the home of President James Monroe. This event is FREE and open to the public. \nDuring the November meeting of our book club\, Highland guide Miranda Burnett will lead the group in discussion of Ties That Bound: Founding First Ladies and Slaves\, by Marie Jenkins Schwartz. Guests can support Highland by purchasing their copy at the Highland Museum Shop. \nThe Chicago Press says “Behind every great man stands a great woman. And behind that great woman stands a slave. Or so it was in the households of the Founding Fathers from Virginia\, where slaves worked and suffered throughout the domestic environments of the era\, from Mount Vernon\, Monticello\, and Montpelier to the nation’s capital. American icons like Martha Washington\, Martha Jefferson\, and Dolley Madison were all slaveholders. And as Marie Jenkins Schwartz uncovers in Ties That Bound\, these women\, as the day-to-day managers of their households\, dealt with the realities of a slaveholding culture directly and continually\, even in the most intimate of spaces.” \nTo RSVP for this FREE event\, click on the link below. \n[otw_shortcode_button href=”mailto:museumshop@highland.org” size=”medium” icon_type=”general foundicon-mail” icon_position=”left” shape=”radius” color_class=”otw-blue” target=”_blank”]RSVP Now[/otw_shortcode_button]

SUMMARY:Tuesday Tunes with The Pollocks
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Tunes is now a FREE concert series! James Monroe’s Highland\, in partnership with The Front Porch\, will host the 4th annual Tuesday Tunes\, a three-part series of summertime evening concerts at the home of President James Monroe. These performances are a perfect opportunity to bring the family out with blanket and chairs to enjoy music from Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region! \nThe final Tuesday Tunes of the season will take place on August 14\, from 6 to 9 p.m.\, and will feature The Pollocks!\n \nLocal food and beverage vendors will be on-site. Guests are encouraged to buy or pack a picnic and experience the beauty of James Monroe’s Highland at dusk. While alcohol will be available for purchase at Tuesday Tunes\, guests are asked to leave their own alcoholic beverages at home. \n\n\n\nAbout The Pollocks\n\nThe Pollocks started around a kitchen table and a bottle of brown liquor. Around 2008\, we had more songs than sense and decided that we were just as entitled to glory and riches as anybody. It’s not a complicated process- you turn on the machines\, plug in and give up your ghost. Then again\, there’s the job\, sickness\, breakups\, jealousy\, hangovers\, weather… So through thick and thinner\, we keep cranking out the widgets- flushing money down the toilet and swan-diving into the madness of it all. We play shows. We reflect. The songs pile up… \n\n\n\nSponsored by:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n
