DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Tunes is now a FREE concert series! James Monroe’s Highland\, in partnership with The Front Porch\, will host the 4th annual Tuesday Tunes\, a three-part series of summertime evening concerts at the home of President James Monroe. These performances are a perfect opportunity to bring the family out with blanket and chairs to enjoy music from Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region! \nThe first Tuesday Tunes of the season will take place on June 26\, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.\, and will feature Faster Than Walking! This concert will include a family square dance. \nLocal food and beverage vendors will be on-site. Guests are encouraged to buy or pack a picnic and experience the beauty of James Monroe’s Highland at dusk. While alcohol will be available for purchase at Tuesday Tunes\, guests are asked to leave their own alcoholic beverages at home. \n\n\n\nAbout Faster Than Walking\n\nFaster Than Walking has been playing old-time music together since the mid 1990’s. Started by fiddler Joe Mead and harmonica player John Murphy\, the current line-up with Dan Rublee on banjo\, Chris Leva on guitar\, and bassist Zach Blatter has been together for 15 years\, sharing the stage with acts such as Tony Rice\, Old Crow Medicine Show\, and many more. \n\n\n\n\nSponsored by:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n

DESCRIPTION:Highland\, the home of President James Monroe\, in a partnership with the Speak! Language Center and the International School of Charlottesville\, is excited to announce On the Farm with Mr. Monroe! This French and Spanish immersion camp for children ages 4-10 will be held Monday through Friday\, June 25-29\, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. \nThe camp will focus on the French and Spanish languages and forge the connection between France\, Spain\, and the legacy of James Monroe. The camp will include daily language lessons\, private tours of the house and gardens with scavenger hunts\, afternoon historic crafts on the property\, period parlor games\, nature walks\, and stories. \nThis is the second of four summer 2018 French and Spanish language immersion camps. SUMMARY:Woodworking Demonstration with Roger Authers
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday June 16\, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.\, Roger Authers\, artisan and wood turner\, will be at the Highland Museum Shop demonstrating his craft. This demonstration is FREE and open to the public. Come learn about the art of wood-turning\, and the various techniques used on a lathe to produce bowls\, table lamps\, candle holders\, and the like.   On display will be examples of Roger’s work at various stages of production along with finished products using a variety of locally-harvested hardwoods.  His laminated creations of contrasting color and texture are especially attractive. \nAbout Roger Authers\nRoger first learned to work with a lathe as a teenager in his native England.  Since moving to Charlottesville in 2004 he has honed his skills and enjoys the challenge of creating items both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
